ARTIST STATEMENT

India manufactures 250 billion bricks a year. Many are carried by women all day long on their heads to earn a meager income for their families. Belonging to India’s lower castes, they have no rights and receive no benefits.

Eight bricks can weigh 40 pounds. A female worker typically earns less than $2 carrying one thousand bricks, walking forth and back between a big brick stack and the building site.
